Israel bets on robotic tractor for high-risk missions against Hamas in Gaza (X @AFP)
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have started using a robotic version of the armored Caterpillar D9 tractor, called “Robdozer“, in military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Operated remotely, the equipment was designed to carry out engineering tasks in combat zones without putting soldiers at direct risk. During a demonstration, the vehicle was controlled from a defense fair in the United States, showcasing its potential for remote operation.
The Robdozer is used for clearing paths, removing debris, and demolishing buildings, even under enemy fire. In Gaza, these tractors have been crucial in high-risk missions, such as urban area clearing and neutralizing enemy positions with the “Nohal Sir Lachatz” tactic, which involves driving through buildings with the vehicle.
With reinforced armor and protection against anti-tank weapons, the Robdozer has also proven effective in mine-clearing operations, withstanding even large mine explosions.
In addition to its role in direct combat, robotic tractors are also used for building fortifications, assisting in field engineering, and rescuing damaged vehicles. The growing use of these systems reflects the Israeli military’s strategy to expand the use of unmanned technologies in conflicts, especially in areas like the “Morag corridor,” a strategic region near the border with Egypt.

At first glance, there is nothing odd about a bulldozer turning up soil at a test site in Israel, but as it approaches, it’s clear: the driver’s seat is eerily empty.
